Save the Retro Pink Bathroom

I recently finished up a fun, little project in Alameda, CA.  The client owns one of those fabulous Mediterraneans in the heart of the city.  Here is what the bathroom looked liked prior to My Big Save – the wallpaper had pussy willows on it and the sheer drape in front of the tub and window, well let’s just say… I think this look is a little bit quiet.

The tile is to die for… if you love the retro mix of turquoise and pink!

Turquoise And Pink Tile in Bathroom

Little did I realize what a challenge this task was going to become for me.  Even with access to all the showrooms at the San Francisco Design Center, it was not an easy task to find a new fabric and wallpaper to update their retro pink bathroom.  For starters there are not many fabrics out there that pair turquoise and pink.  And, then we had to find the right look and feel.  This client was looking for something that was romantic, dainty and pretty.  There were other directions that this bathroom could have gone with this color palette – beachy or funky… using a chevron stripe or ikat, but these were not a good fit with the client’s own personal style.  Here is a peak at the selection that the client decided to go with from Sloan Miyasato: Thibaut wallpaper T2841, Houles trim 33278-9740 and from Fabricut: 38211-01.

Taking a cue from Nature

Taking a cue from Nature

This weekend I went to Davenport, CA for a funeral. It was a beautiful celebration of one man’s life. He lived a simple life and his purpose was so obvious. He was here to give to his family and friends. This picture I took as I was leaving the gathering. It reminded me of a the little bathroom in a cottage that I helped to renovate this past year in Piedmont, CA.  This tile is by Walker Zanger and is called Roku.

Flower Power!

I am in love with the retro whimsical feel of the flower patterns that I am seeing around these days…

Villa Romo Fabric Elodie Carmine V3101/02

This Villa Romo Fabric in PINK is from De Sousa Hughes at the San Francisco Design Center. The manufacturer Villa Romo, recently changed it’s USA name to match the rest of the world. It’s now Villa Nova. It’s color name is Elodie Carmine number V3101/02.  This design takes it’s cue from a “lady’s purse” flower.  This fabric will soon grace a few pillows in a client’s Oakland Victorian home.  It was recently added to the mix when the fabric we selected had been discontinued… so, so, so pleased that I love it even more than our original choice!!!  Whew!  Hate it when that happens, but fabric does occasional become discontinued….

Tea Towel with Floral Pattern from Cost Plus World Market This is my kitchen towel.  LOVE IT!  It’s in my mid-century modern home.  My kitchen has grey walls and I love the pop of ORANGE against the grey walls.  You too can have this fabulous turquoise and red floral towel… It’s from Cost Plus World Market and so reasonably priced!  I purchased it several years ago, but it’s still available as I saw it last week when I was shopping for a garbage can for a client’s bathroom!

Floral Pattern on Paper in Turquoise, Red, Pink and GreenLove this PINK AND TURQUOISE paper!  I am thinking about painting the back side of my front door using this paper as my inspiration!  It was wrapped around a present given to me for my birthday by an artist friend of mine…

Floral Pattern on Garbage Can at Cost Plus World MarketThis is a floral pattern that now graces a garbage can that can be purchased at Cost Plus World Market!  Love the blend of ORANGES, TURQUOISE, RED and hint of PURPLE.   This is soon to be presented as an option in a client’s home.  We will see if it makes the cut for their bathroom?!

Are flowers in your future???

This Bathroom went from DRAB to FAB!

This is my latest project… a master bath renovation in Oakland, CA. We stole about a foot of linear space around the perimeter of the bathroom from the master bedroom and closet then gave it to this tiny Master Bath. I am so pleased to see this design become a reality! The client selected this fabulous Walker Zanger tile. It is called Tozen and it was designed by Lunada Bay. The color is Oxygen. It comes in many different finishes. This finish is called Silk and it has a muted calmness about it. The style is called Soldier which is 1″x2″ off set tiles which reflects the client’s need for something more special than the typical subway look. For the wall color, I provided the client with two options and they selected Cloudy Sky. It’s a Benjamin Moore Color. Number BM2122-30. The vanity and tower are by IKEA from the Godmorgon Collection. We considered several options for the medicine cabinet and selected the Kohler Verdera as it offered a sleek line, flexibility with the door swings and shelf positions and fit the space perfectly. We worked with James Silva Construction who did a meticulous job keeping the dust down! Their bathroom is now a Restful and Renewed Retreat!

Is that Black? …because I think I have seen the light!

I am so in love with the black wall! I painted my office bathroom, BLACK! This fabulous black color that now adorns my bathroom is a Sherwin-Williams color called Black Fox, number SW7020. It has warm brown undertones, but in my space looks very BLACK and EDGY!  I love the capriz shell chandelier and the extra bling from the crystals, too. I recently went to a party in SF at a mid-century modern home and the entire front facade of the home was entirely black. It was fabulous! They were fabulous! Black is so fancy, so formal and so sexy! One of my clients recently moved to San Ramon and I tried to convince him to paint his office… Black… but, to no avail. Hmm… what do you think? Does Black do something for you?

I met Martyn Lawrence Bullard

Yesterday, I went to the Design San Francisco event at the SFDC which is being held from February 4-6, 2015.  While at the Benjamin Moore Showroom at the Color Trend 2015 presentation I heard Martyn Lawrence Bullard speak!  He wore a beautiful Claret colored sport coat in homage to the berry colors announced as color trends for 2015.

He shared that he only uses Benjamin Moore Colors these days!  He is a convert.  I do quietly disagree. I think there are many fabulous colors out there and Benjamin Moore has not cornered the market on all the colors that I see in my head.  I wish they did, as I believe their quality is superior to their competition, but unfortunately using a color match…. does not always work.  Learned that lesson the hard way!

During the book signing, I was brave enough to hand him my business card… but, of course I told him it was just for giggles. The name of his new book is ‘Live, Love & Decorate‘.  It really is a master piece, (and, I don’t say this lightly) filled with amazing color and an incredible use of space.  As readers, you get a glimpse of the homes of Chris Rock, Cher, Sir Elton John, Cheryl Tiegs, to just name a few.  It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I would love to live in Aaron and Julia Sorkin OR Tamara Mellon’s homes…. just for a day or two.  pretty please.

He loved the color of my business card which is a shade of turquoise with some grey tones that muddy it down.  Some might call it Peacock or a blue version of the Tiffany Green.  It’s very romantic.   We agreed that we both love this color!

He shared that it is one of his favorite colors and I told him that I noticed that he has an affinity for this color in his work.

I am working on renovating an attic right now in Berkeley… I really love this client’s style.   It’s very sweet and romantic.  We used Thibaut wallpaper number T6937 available from Sloan Miyasato on the ceiling in the attic.  And, we painted the walls a fabulous color… you guessed it…turquoise! It is called Kelly Moore Folk Tales KM5069-2.

Benjamin Moore Announces the COLOR OF THE YEAR 2015

An annual event for design professionals is ‘Design San Francisco’ which this year is on February 4 – 6, 2015.  I attended a meeting at the Benjamin Moore Showroom where they unveiled the color of the year for 2015!

http://blog.vkvvisuals.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Benjamin-Moores-Guilford-Green.png

This is not a new Benjamin Moore color.  I’ve used it for many years and even used it on the walls in my own family room back in 2008.  I have a new home these days with a new blue color on my family room walls…  But, I can share from personal experience that Guilford Green HC-116 is a very easy color to live and work in.  I have many reasons for suggesting green for a client’s home.  In the home office, it conjures of feelings of wealth and success.  Green is the color of money.  In the bathroom, it reminds us of meadows and trees surrounded by calm waters.  More recently, I used Holingsworth Green HC-141 on the exterior of a home in Berkeley.

After photo with a new green facade! It’s actually Benjamin Moore’s Holingsworth Green HC-141
which has less yellow in it than Guildford Green.

Personally, I found the rest of Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends for 2015 much more exciting!  Here are a few…   Carter Plum CW-355 is a fabulous deep, dark raspberry and I have always thought Silver Fox 2108-50 had a masculine edge to it.  Isn’t Split Pea 2146-30 funky?!

My favorite Benjamin Colors from the Color Trend Predictions for 2015

My favorite Benjamin Moore Colors from the Color Trend Predictions for 2015

Other trends that were mentioned in the meeting:

  • How about semi-gloss on the ceiling?!  I’m not sure I could sell this idea, but I will think on it…
  • Try using a pop of color in the furthest room, when you can view multiple rooms through doorways. It will invite you and guest to explore.
  • Use all of the shades of green in Benjamin Moore’s Color Trends 2015 to create a monochromatic color scheme.
  • Try using blush hues if you have a historical home.  They whisper of romance and opulence.
  • Use a range of colors from bold to blush in the same family, such as Old Claret 2083-30 and Pink Damask OC-72.  It is like going on a graceful journey.
  • Consider accenting with Guilford Green HC-116 in every room. Make it your signature color and it will ground your rooms and provide a cohesive look and feel throughout your home.

Color is all about graceful flow throughout the home in 2015!

Crystals Swing from the Chandelier!

Back in November 2013, I painted the bathroom at my office a charcoal black color with brown undertones called Black Fox by Sherwin Williams SW7020 and added a capiz shell chandelier that I purchased from Light in the box.  I got a great price around $200, but the assembly was a nightmare.  I even had my children with their tiny fingers help string the shells together.  I don’t even want to admit how long it took us to assemble the shells.  Fast forward to February 3, 2015 and I stumbled upon some extra crystals left over from a client project.  I added a few strands to the bottom of the chandelier… Bling!  Love it!

Hot off the Press: Pink!

Pink is getting a lot of publicity in 2011.  Pantone just predicted 18-2120, Honeysuckle is THE color for 2011, which is a HOT raspberry color.  And, the The New York Times just wrote an article on the pink bathroom, referencing one of my favorite movies from my high school years, “Pretty in Pink”.   And they noted blogger Pam Keuber, who started a blog called http://savethepinkbathroom; a hilarious blog, worth checking out!  But, beware, she asks you to take a pledge to never destroy your vintage pink bathroom!

What do you think?  Will you be keeping your PINK 1970s bathroom? Or, do you have any plans to change your living room to PINK in 2011?  Let me know.

I’ve included a few pictures of the PINK work I’ve done and a few PINK photos that I find inspirational.  Enjoy!

Elizabeth Barnes is the principal designer at Leeza Designs in Piedmont, CA. In my opinion, Color on walls can create a great background for your artwork or can take center stage.  The trick is selecting colors that mirror the light levels in your rooms.  And, my goal is to choose colors that you feel comfortable living in and that create a cohesive feel throughout your home.
